Grammy award winning rockers CHICAGO are always on tour somewhere around the world, but they took a day off this week and flew to Los Angeles to perform on the season finale of FOX-TV's American Idol.
Before he was named winner later that evening, Chicago-area native Lee DeWyze was “stoked” to perform with his hometown favorites. With a worldwide audience of 40 million viewers, Lee and Chicago performed a medley of some of the band's biggest hits, “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?”, “If You Leave Me Now” and “25 Or 6 To 4.”
While many of the evening's recording artists performed with various American Idol singers from earlier this season, Chicago were especially thrilled to not only have a “local” sing with them, but also the show's finalist and ultimate winner. And the band may see the American Idol winner again this summer as DeWyze told them that if his schedule allows, he would join them on stage when Chicago plays in Chicago at the Charter One Pavilion on Northerly Island on July 16 and 17. The band and singer bonded during rehearsals for the show, and Chicago told DeWyze that he can count on them for advice or can join them on tour anytime.
It was an evening Chicago wouldn't have missed, even though they had to leave immediately after the show to get back on their tour schedule, with a concert the very next night on the East Coast.
The song “If You Leave Me Now” has special meaning for the band this year, as it is part of a promotion they're doing with the American Cancer Society in 2010 to help fight breast cancer, where a winning bidder comes on stage and sings that song with the band at every concert. The audience loves it, the band loves it, the singer has an experience they'll always remember and a lot of money is raised for a great charity.
Up next for Chicago is a U.S. summer tour with the Doobie Brothers, followed by more solo dates and then international tours in South America and Australia.
